How to pay
- x402: USDC on Base (eip155:8453). Call, read the 402, retry with PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. Settlement happens only when the call succeeds.
- MPP: the 402 also carries an MPP challenge for clients that speak it. MPP settles before the answer is sent, so DomainRef does all the lookups first: if DNS or the registry cannot answer, you get the free refusal and no MPP charge.
- API key: an Afriref API key with card credit (bought at afriref.dev/pricing) works here too, sent as X-API-Key. A failed call is refunded to the key.
Never charged
Bad input (400), a domain that does not exist (404), a domain that only resolves to private addresses (400), the age lookup for registries without RDAP, e.g. .za/.co.za, .me, .de, .io, .eu (422), rate limits (429), DNS or registry outages (503), and every HEAD request. These hold on every rail, MPP included.
If a paid call fails anyway, email api@3l-groupconsulting.co.za with the receipt or transaction hash and we refund it.
